During development, the application was originally codenamed "NetDocs", then "XDocs". The current version is Microsoft InfoPath 2013.

The main feature of InfoPath is the ability to create, view and edit documents that support some user-defined XML schema. Connection to external systems - Access databases, MS SQL, web services - can be used to obtain and change data. In addition, because the data is in XML form, documents can be processed by third-party XML processors. Using Microsoft Office Forms Server or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server allows you to work with XML forms through a browser, without installing the InfoPath application on the client.
